The decline followed a sharp appreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee, with the US dollar falling 2.4 percent to Rs. 329 during early trading after the Central Bank introduced new foreign exchange conversion requirements for exporters.

Ex-Estate offerings rose marginally to 1.0 million kilograms, although overall quality remained largely average. Demand was concentrated on teas displaying good liquor colour and strength, while teas with lighter and thinner liquors were discounted. Lower-end teas weakened progressively during the sale, resulting in an increase in unsold quantities.

High and Medium Grown CTC teas were the worst affected segment, with a large proportion of offerings remaining unsold due to insufficient buying interest. In contrast, corresponding Low Grown CTC varieties continued to perform well.

Traders also reported reduced market activity amid ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, with shipping and logistics constraints dampening buying sentiment. Low Grown teas accounted for approximately 2.5 million kilograms and recorded fair demand in the leafy, semi-leafy and tippy categories, while premium teas enjoyed stronger demand. Premium tippy teas generally appreciated in value, while select grades in the tippy category also posted gains. However, several leafy and semi-leafy grades eased, particularly among higher-priced offerings.

Industry observers noted that demand remained selective, favouring well-made teas with strong cup characteristics as buyers continued to exercise caution amid currency and geopolitical uncertainties.

Source: Daily News

Sri Lanka’s tea auction offerings increased further this week, reaching 6.4 million kilogrammes, with Low and Mid Grown leafy and semi-leafy teas continuing to attract healthy demand and satisfactory prices despite emerging market challenges.
