The Sri Lankan government has a super app on the way with the aim of streamlining its services to the public. First announced back in last September, the app is also meant to integrate with another upcoming project, the Sri Lanka Unique Digital ID (SLUDI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sri Lanka has a messy track record when it comes to digital government services. Often, users go through multiple logins, navigate different sites, and even submit duplicate forms just to access a specific service. Then the services themselves are a hit or a miss, ranging from helpful utility platforms<\/a> to potential security nightmares<\/a>. The current government sees its proposed super app as an answer to this problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Of course, super apps are nothing new. The term itself was believed to have been coined by BlackBerry founder back in 2010 during the Mobile World Congress. The idea only seems to have grown in popularity in recent years. The successes of companies like WeChat (China), Grab (Singapore), and Uber (US) have prompted many companies to follow a similar approach. Even in Sri Lanka, the likes of Helakuru and PickMe are pushing for a similar model. Now, the Government of Sri Lanka is also banking on the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On September 22, 2025, the Government of Sri Lanka announced plans<\/a> for a \u2018Government Super App\u2019 with the sole purpose of providing public services via a single web application. The government claims that its fragmented digital services infrastructure causes an annual loss of LKR 500 million. The super app would streamline a wide range of these government services onto a single mobile and web interface. This would serve around 14 million Sri Lankan citizens aged 18 and over, as well as the 2 million annual visitors to the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Government Super App project is a two-phase project spanning between 2025 and 2026, with an LKR 500 million budget. According to N-able<\/a>, which won the contract to build the app, the first phase will add four government services, with plans to expand that to 80 in the future. Neither the government nor N-able names the four services in question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, at a recent public meeting in Bulathsinhala, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake listed the following as part of the upcoming super app:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, the super app will utilize the upcoming SLUDI to authenticate its users. This means citizens can potentially access government services via biometric data such as fingerprints, iris, or facial scans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As of now, it\u2019s unclear when the actual app will launch to the public. Last month, the Ministry of Mass Media reported<\/a> that the Government Super App is among the initiatives under review by the president. Back in June, Digital Economy Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne stated the initial rollout for the super app is targeting later this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n More recently, the government has also stated that the SLUDI project will launch in December. As the digital ID is set to be integrated with the super app, the project may possibly get a public release around the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Calling it a super app is the easy part. The real test is whether the underlying services work from login to completion, whether the systems behind them are integrated, and whether users can get help when the technology fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Deputy Minister Weeraratne points out that departments such as land, health, and tax are going through a revamp as part of the streamlining process. He added that the Land Registry and the Health Ministry are being digitalized as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then there\u2019s the question of security, especially considering the scope and the government\u2019s history around the subject<\/a>. However, ICTA claims that the project will implement \u201crobust security protocols, encryption, and SLUDI integration to ensure secure transactions and protect citizen data,\u201d as part of the project\u2019s overview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Only time will tell how much of the Government Super App\u2019s ambitions will come to fruition.
