SHENZHEN/PALO ALTO — U.S. personal computing giant HP Inc. and sanctioned Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei Technologies Co. have signed a multi-year global patent cross-licensing agreement covering Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 technologies.
The agreement grants HP access to Huawei’s portfolio of standardized wireless patents, while providing Huawei reciprocal rights to HP’s intellectual property, both companies said in statements. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The transaction comes as a result of patent friction between the two hardware firms, following legal actions initiated by Huawei in European courts over Wi-Fi 6 technology implementations.
HP described the agreement as a routine industry standard-essential patent (SEP) license, emphasizing that it does not constitute a broader strategic partnership, product collaboration, or supply chain arrangement with the blacklisted Chinese firm.
Huawei operates under U.S. export controls stemming from U.S. government national security sanctions.
